I am 25 with acne prone, combination skin. It was a problem during my teen years but it cleared up almost completely after I started using Proactiv (only the repairing lotion) in college. After a while the Proactiv seemed not to work as well anymore so I stopped. Since then my skin seems to produce even more oil than it did in high school. Nothing in my routine has changed, I don't use harsh cleansers or products that dry out the skin. The only thing left I can think of that would cause this problem is not drinking enough water. Can this alone be enough to cause the skin to over-produce oil?

Can dehydration contribute to or cause extremely oily skin?

Yes drink lots of water, you'd be surprised how much that can do for your skin. And with dehydration there are phases, lots of oils and sweat followed by no sweat. That opens your pores making it much easier to get dirty and susceptible to acne, and then leaving them that way.

Can dehydration contribute to or cause extremely oily skin?

I was always told yes, it could cause acne. But I personally never thought it could. Start using Proactive again. AND Start drinking more water to find out if it helps.
