Demodectic mange???

My four month old boxer was diagnosed with Demodectic mange. My vet said to wait and see if it will clear up on its own. If not I will have to bring him in and do a skin scraping and then go from there as far as treatment. He only has 4 small spots as of now. He never scratches at it so it doesn't seem to bother him for now. I have read about this condition and it says that stress is a main cause for this outbreak so what can I do make him less stressed? I am a stay at home mother so he is rarely left alone and he is very active and we make sure to take time out for him everyday. I also have a 2 year old daughter that he follows around most of the day and they play together. He gets fed twice a day and several treats as well. He is very playful and always seems happy so I really don' t know what to do to make him less stressed. I also read that it is very common in boxers...? Would I be better off getting treatment started before waiting to see if it will clear up on its own?

Demodectic mange???

Your vet is correct about waiting. The alternative is to treat the mange with a pesticide, so he is just being careful.

As far as the cause, there are more causes than just stress. More and more often these days, breeders are not making sure mom is healthy when they breed, and whole litters come out inflicted with demodex mange. If the mom is not healthy, she doesnt pass her immunities to the pups, causing an immune deficiency in the pups. This it turn can cause the mange. This also happens if the pups are taken away and sold before 8 weeks, caused by the same immune deficiency. There are even som cases where it is hereditary, and these females should never be bred.
