I have a King Pigeon that I rescued from the neighbor's cat. He has recovered from his injuries, but he seems to be losing feathers around his neck. I can see quills and reddish skin, but the feathers are gone. Do you think this is a parasite problem or disease or something else?

Pigeon losing feathers around neck?

Hey!

It's so brilliant of you to rescue and care for this bird!

It's absolutely nothing to worry about, all of my pigeons are at the height of their molt now, I can't wait till its over, it is such a mess in the aviary with all the feathers every where!

He should be fully feathered again in about 2 months, you will notice bald patches on his chest and a lot of his tail and wing feather will fall out but he will be fine.

Molting does stress the bird a bit so keep him calm and give him plenty of treats! Also if you want to add a bit of garlic to his water, it does good for feather growth and ups his immune system when he needs it most!

Diamond: Pigeons don't actually carry very many diseases that are transmittable to humans. Ornithosis is one, I have only heard of a pigeon fancier catching that when he gave his bird the kiss of life. Salmonellosis also but you would have to eat the pigeon poop to get that. They are also by no means dirty, they bathe 2-3 times a day, please inform your friend, she obviously has no knowledge about the birds at all.
