If it has turned black, it means that there is probably dead blood or the skin itself is dead. Also, depending on where you find the tag, please be very careful. The best way to remove a skin tag is to use a scalpel, or a cauterizing knife. Be Sterile.

Please don't do the whole Compound W trick to harden it and rip. That is unneccessary pain that can be taken care of quickly. You would need days to apply the glue to make it tough enough to tear skin.

Have the doctor do it.

It is not harmful to cut of skin tags. However they are due to low grade skin viral infections. A straight cut at the base often results in recurrence at the same site, as there are still virus particles in the immediate area. This is why GPs tend to freeze them off, since this tends to kill of the virus in the surrounding skin.
