I read an article today in which the husband of a new mother praised his wife for not developing stretchmarks during her pregnancy. Whilst I am pleased the young woman's skin remains supple & free from these 'unsightly' stretchmarks, it has made me think about how our society tends to expect women to develop stretchmarks during pregnancy, but considers them unacceptable at any other time.

Many women with stretchmarks have never been pregnant. Teenage girls often develop them during their growth spurt whilst many women get them with weight gain. So why is it that such a big fuss is made over women who don't get stretchmarks during pregnancy? Moreover, how is this sort of societal snobbery towards stretchmarks impacting on the millions of women who have stretchmarks but have never been pregnant? Most products intended for stretchmarks are targeted at pregnant women, thus reinforcing the idea that non-pregnant women who have this problem are insignificant.

Cheering on women who don't have stretchmarks? Bizarre!?

i dont see anything with stetch marks, it is just how some of us are, i didnt have them before i had my son and now i have them and every day it reminds of him when i look at them.

having said that i dont think it is a crime for women who has them and never had kids. it is okay and very natural, other people have big noses. others have small breast and other big butts ... so what?

i think that man is a bit crazy and may be he should learn to keep his big month shut, we dont wanna know anything about his wife.
